Gothic -
$12.99 Director Ken Russell applies his trademark excess to this surreal, experimental examination of the creative dementia which shaped Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein. The story is embellished from events which allegedly took place at the Swiss villa of Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) on the night of June 16, 1816. Byron's guests include poet Percy Shelley (Julian Sands) and his future wife Mary (Natasha Richardson); Mary's half-sister Claire (Myriam Cyr) and Byron's leech-happy personal physician Dr. John Polidori (Timothy Spall). Byron promises them a night of horror like only a mad poet can deliver -- after partaking of laudanum and other hallucinogens, the guests tell ghost stories while exploring the dark corridors of his home. From here, Russell dives headlong into madness, discarding plot structure in favor of fever-dream setpieces in which the guests confront living manifestations of their own fears and insecurities -- creative, mortal and sexual, among others. The raging Romantics are also given to lengthy discourse on the nature of fear and the fine line between creative genius and insanity; by the film's end, viewers may find themselves wondering the same thing about the director. Those who may prefer a more subdued speculation on the same theme should seek out Ivan Passer's Haunted Summer. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

Gothic Bellydance -

Urban Gothic: Season 1 -
$24.99 Includes:Urban Gothic [TV Series] (2000) Urban Gothic: Series 01 (2000) Urban Gothic: Series 02 (2001) Urban Gothic [TV Series] This British horror anthology series specialized in contemporary tales of terror, set in modern-day London. Quite a few veterans of the legendary Hammer Films scarefests of the 1950s and 1960s showed up as guest stars. Created by Tom de Ville and Steve Matthews, Urban Gothic was originally shown in 13 half-hour segments by Britain's Channel 5 from May 17 to August 23, 2000. A second season of nine episodes aired from October 22 to December 17, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Urban Gothic: Series 01 Season one of the U.K.'s low-budget but high-voltage horror anthology Urban Gothic dishes up 18 stories which make up in chills what they lack in production values and star names. The season begins with "Dead Meat," as a couple of teens try to revive a frozen corpse. Next up is "Vampirology," featuring horror-flick icon Ingrid Pitt as herself in the tale of a documentary shoot that goes horribly awry. Satan takes up residence in a low-rent housing project in "Old Nick," while a pair of sharpsters find it's much easier to break into a mental home than it is to break out in "Lacuna." "Deptford Voodoo" deals with an elderly immigrant who is not as sweet and harmless as he seems. "Sum of the Parts" spotlights a disturbingly direct method of obtaining organ transplants. The Devil disguises himself as a TV producer in "The One Where." In "Cry Wolf," the discovery of a "wolf-boy" loose in London yields even grislier revelations. Five punks in after-school detention devise a gruesome method of alleviating boredom in "Be Movie," "Pineapple Chunks" is another of those contemporary fables about a "perfect" community that isn't. A would-be criminal's gang initiation includes a grimmer challenge than usual in "The Boy's Club." "Turn On" is concerned with a "miracle" pregnancy with a less than miraculous denouement. And in the season finale "Thirteen," we are allowed to delve into a file chock-full of familiar urban legends -- well, at least they're "urban," anyway. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Urban Gothic: Series 02 Nine new tales of terror comprise the second season of the U.K.'s popular "midnight" TV horror anthology Urban Gothic. The once-popular "touch the car" fad yields unpleasant results in the opener, "Sandman." The characters in "Membrane" comes to grief while playing God. In "Necormance," a girl kills herself so her spirit can bond with her goth boyfriend. A shapeshifting serial killer sets London on its ear in "Eater." Anthony Daniels, best known as Star Wars' C3PO, shows up in mufti, more or less, in "Serotin Wild." And "Ritual Slaughter" is set in what amounts to a training camp for multiple murderers. The season and the series concludes with the Pirandellian "The End," wherein an episode of Urban Gothic is interrupted by a bizarre pirate-TV transmission; and the two-part "Dollhouse Burns," all about a freeze-dried teenager and a cult tha |

Gothic Melting Ice Cream Darkness: Nightmare
$22.99 Gothic Melting Ice Cream's Darkness Nightmare summarizes five years of Tommy Heavenly6, an alter ego of Tomoko Kawase created after she grew dissatisfied with her "synth pop character" Tommy February6. Tommy Heavenly6 is, without question, a bigger treat to fans of the Brilliant Green, which Kawase fronted and which remains the main highlight on her r?sum?, but those expecting more of that band's unique alt-rock goodness may still walk away disappointed: on goodness, Gothic Melting delivers, but it's short on the "unique" part. Tommy Heavenly6's trade is melodic, punk-tinged alternative rock, speedy, with the occasional genuinely heavy song and a couple of sentimental numbers thrown into the rumble. In other words, it's nothing that hasn't been done before, in Japan as well as in the West, and Tommy Heavenly6 only comes across as an also-ran in the style. Just as with Tommy February6, Kawase relies too much on the music of others: both "Hey My Friend" and "Ready?," for example, rip off Avril Lavigne, the only difference being that the former draws on her semi-ballads (think "Complicated") while the latter is a clone of the pop-punkish "Sk8er Boy." In most other cases, the tunes on Gothic Melting stand on their own more firmly, but the feeling of derivativeness still persists, boosted by the fact that Kawase doesn't try to work the style into her own system, content with merely blasting through a set of alt-rock standards. The songs just don't stand out: Tommy Heavenly6 can't live up to Lavigne's killer hooks, and she has neither Anna Tsuchiya's charisma and delivery skills nor Olivia's dark optimism and unbelievable voice. There are some standout cuts on this record, such as the ten-minute theatrical gothic suite "Lollipop Candy BAD girl," but it's probably harder to make an 80-minute record that wouldn't have at least a few of those. All in all, Gothic Melting isn't half bad -- Kawase picks good influences -- but the music is obviously short on individuality. ~ Alexey Eremenko |
