What are these Gothic Gargoyles and what are they doing up there?

Gargoyle Wall Relief
Would you believe Gothic Gargoyles are waterspouts. Yes, originally their purpose was to spew rainwater in the gutter away from the building to preserve the stonework of the building. They were grotesquely carved human or animal or half human and half animal creatures.

Those who believe in superstition say they scare away evil spirits as well as act as a rain spout.

Originally they appeared on churches and cathedrals then they moved to important buildings. Now they’ve came down from these buildings and found their way into lovely gardens. The figures that serve as ornamental and artistic function only are called chimera, but everyone still refers to them as Gargoyles.

Gothic Gargoyles date back to the medieval period. This was a time when most people were illiterate. The carvings served the role of today’s books, they tell stories and are a reflection of medieval life. The only documentation of the reasoning behind the grotesque figures is in the carving itself. Any original legends have probably been lost over time or have changed so much that they don’t tell us anything about their true intentions. In recent years people have invented some new “legends” and claimed that they’re old stories. But there’s no authentic 700 year old writing about them to document these stories. Only if those Gargoyles could talk what stories they could tell us.

Legends tell us they aren’t really stone statues, they’re real creatures. They turn into stone during the daylight and sleep. When the earth is covered by darkness they come alive to protect the building, church, castle, home or garden where they reside. They’ve save humans countless times receiving noting good in return just hatred, fear and loathing.

Some legends tell us Gothic Gargoyles were the child of the devil and humans. These creatures hatch out every 600 years or so. It’s said that it iss now time for them to hatch again…

It seems these Gothic Creatures do have a softer side. Here’s an interesting poem with a view of us through their eyes.

Gargoyle Sunglasses

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gothic Gargoyles

Did Gothic Gargoyles wear sunglasses?

Gothic Gargoyles should wear sunglasses as they stand watch on rooftops, gateposts and pedestals all day long. Their job is to protect you from evil spirits. So, wouldn’t you think they would want to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays?

If a Gargoyle were to buy sunglasses, do you think they would want to make a fashion statement? Or, would they go for the extreme sport sunglasses for the quality and features they provide?

First this creature would need to choose a pair that suits the shape of his face. The secret rule of thumb is to choose a pair with the opposite shape of your face.

Next check the label, sitting in the sun all day they’ll need to have sunglasses that block at least 99% of harmful UV rays.

Now choose the Lens they can be either glass or plastic. Some even have special hi-tech treatments.

Mirrored or not? This thin layer of metallic applied to lens reduces visible light that would have reached the eye, but it doesn’t reduce the UV rays.

Polarized? Yes, definitely. This cuts the glare from smooth surfaces such as pavement, windows, water, sand, snow, swords and shields.

A company in Rhode Island has developed sunglasses with pure design and functional purposes. They have impact resistant lens, they exceed the MIL-STD 622 ballistic test, which consists of stopping a .22 caliber bullet at 20 feet. The lenses are 100% UVA, UVB and UVC protection. Their polarized lens absorb horizontal polarized light to eliminate glare. The lenses are coated with a NASA derived scratch-resistant and anti-fog coating. And these performance sunglasses are precision molded and hand finished, the design provides 210 degree of wraparound protection. These sunglasses can withstand the rigorous arena the Gothic Gargoyle operates in. What better name for this eye ware than Gargoyle Sunglasses.

Soon all the statues on buildings and in gardens and around homes will be sporting a pair of them.
