Gothic decor has more to do with rich textures and ornate pieces than with Gargoyles and skulls.
Gothic style in medieval times was synonymous with everything that was barbarous and rude. But Gothic style doesn’t need to reflect that attitude, it can be warm and inviting with just a little research and thought.
The Gothic period of medieval times inspires the use of dark colors with heavy accent pieces such as animal heads, Gargoyles, claw-footed furniture and thick materials.
There are actually many types of Gothic decor depending on your love for the medieval times and how much history you wish to express.
Some people prefer the historic Gothic era. Some items to consider would be European Gargoyles, dragons, dragon pictures and raven sculptures. Any item would be acceptable that you would expect to see in a castle. A lighter version of this same era could be accomplished in using more rich earth tones. Use candles, swords, fur rugs, heavy tapestry fabrics and even a silver chalice or two.
Another type of Gothic decor is influenced by the Victorian era. This is best accomplished by layering with the use of rich colors and lacy textures. Use wallpaper or fabric on the walls, heavy framed artwork, cloth for covering tables, lots of candles and flowers and knickknacks. Satins and velvet give the home a rich lush feel. Be sure to include books, teapots, large and small vases and any other frill you stumble across.
Believe it or not some people go for Gothic cemetery art. This includes items made from iron, stone and tattered fabrics. Religious items and angles are a part of this theme.

Modern Gothic decor has a clean, sparse look and feel. Items to consider could be iron works, chrome accessories, leather furniture in dark colors and a skull here and there in the mix.
You’re home will look much nicer if the theme flows from room to room. It would be most unappealing if your house had Gothic decor throughout and a modern Italian style kitchen.
Choosing the decor for your home should be given serious consideration. It’s something you’ll want to be comfortable with because you’ll be living with it for a long time.
