Pleurez means ‘to weep’ in French. A pleurant symbolizes solitude, spirituality, introspection, and sorrow.
Pleurant figures have been carved into tombs and, in art in general, exist to show mourning so intense that it is also isolation — shutting away the world out of pain.
Historically, a person who suffered great loss, or felt the need for spiritual penance would go to the monks and request to be a pleurant. If granted, they would spend a year or more under the heavy cloths, completely cut off from the world.
No one talked to a pleurant or interacted with them (basically treated them like they were not in the physical world, rather that they were in the spiritual world). Base food would be left where the pleurant could get it as needed.
The pleurant would use their solitude to wander the grounds working through their pain, trying to find God and overcome the great emotional burden they were bearing.
And when the pleurant felt that their need was finished, the pleurant would simply remove the cloths and return to the regular world.

I’m making a six foot tall garden statue for my sister’s garden, and, since it’s my first time sculpting on this scale, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good, lightweight, durable material that I could cast/sculpt the statue out of?

Fired ceramic clay. Which will have to be hollow in order to be fired in a kiln would allow for whatever plumbing that you plan to include. Cement would work as well. But both of these materials will be problematic both in weight and size. You might want to scale down your plans. Six foot tall is a pretty hefty undertaking even if you have the facilities and equipment to produce a work of this dimension . Fiberglas is lightweight but would be an involved process.

Gothic Art and Architecture, religious and secular buildings, sculpture, stained glass, and illuminated manuscripts and other decorative arts produced in Europe during the latter part of the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century). Gothic art began to be produced in France about 1140, spreading to the rest of Europe during the following century. The Gothic Age ended with the advent of the Renaissance in Italy about the beginning of the 15th century, although Gothic art and architecture continued in the rest of Europe through most of the 15th century, and in some regions of northern Europe into the 16th century. Originally the word Gothic was used by Italian Renaissance writers as a derogatory term for all art and architecture of the Middle Ages, which they regarded as comparable to the works of barbarian Goths. Since then the term Gothic has been restricted to the last major medieval period, immediately following the Romanesque (see Romanesque Art and Architecture). The Gothic Age is now considered one of Europe’s outstanding artistic eras.
Paris had been the leading artistic center of northern Europe since the 1230s. After the ravages of the Plague and the outbreak of the Hundred Years’ War in the 1350s, however, Paris became only one among many artistic centers.
Flamboyant architecture originated in the 1380s with French court architect Guy de Dammartin.
In France from the late 15th century to the 1520s, new châteaux in the flamboyant style were being built extensively, from Amboise (1483-1501) and Blois (1498-1515) on the Loire, to Josselin (early 16th century) in Brittany. The crowning features of their exteriors are those magnified versions of dormer windows, the lucarnes. Sometimes, as on the facade added in 1508 to the Palais de Justice at Rouen, the ornate lucarnes are each flanked by their own diminutive flying buttresses. Other regional styles of secular architecture also flourished, from the Venetian Gothic of the Doges’ Palace (begun 1345?) and the Ca d’Oro (1430?) to the Tudor Gothic of Hampton Court (1515-1536) on the Thames and the Collegiate Gothic, which at Oxford lingered into the early 17th century. I would be cautious. Iguanas in general are solitary and although they may be behaving now, if it decided to attack the beardie it could do alot of damage.

I’m looking for a good priced Gothic Halloween costume for a teen.?
i want a Halloween costume that is pretty Gothic. like a punk rocker or something. and I’m not allowed to buy a costume from party city or any stores. i have to put it together but i want it to be like Gothic. what should i buy to put this together? o and i already have the perfect tights. thx!

Well, when you say Goth I think of someone in all black clothing or black and red. The makeup is usually really heavy and the hair is usually unique, wild or a wild color. Oh, and bulky jewelry.
Check out the Goodwill for the clothing and jewelry. Then surf the net to find some makeup ideas.
I think a tight black skirt that almost goes to your knees, a baggy top (maybe a men’s’ shirt with the big sleeves for cufflinks. Dye it black if you want. Then a big belt around your waist with big jewelry and the overdone makeup and a pair of black boots or heals would look pretty Goth to me.

This Halloween I would like to get a costume similar to something that you might see on Sweeney Todd or Sleepy Hollow (the film). Quite a gothic, tragic type outfit for a woman.

I am just looking at costumes early and everywhere I seem to go, all the woman’s costumes are slutty. I wanted to be a witch or some type of gothic costume. Just, the costumes look like they are for bedroom role playing.
I don’t know how to make costumes so that is out of the question. I want something unique and just not looking like a slut.
