Gothic Gargoyles

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gothic Gargoyles

What are these Gothic Gargoyles and what are they doing up there?

Oscar Garden Statue
Would you believe Gothic Gargoyles are waterspouts. Yes, originally their purpose was to spew rainwater in the gutter away from the building to preserve the stonework of the building. They were grotesquely carved human or animal or half human and half animal creatures.

Those who believe in superstition say they scare away evil spirits as well as act as a rain spout.

Originally they appeared on churches and cathedrals then they moved to important buildings. Now they’ve came down from these buildings and found their way into lovely gardens. The figures that serve as ornamental and artistic function only are called chimera, but everyone still refers to them as Gargoyles.

Gothic Gargoyles date back to the medieval period. This was a time when most people were illiterate. The carvings served the role of today’s books, they tell stories and are a reflection of medieval life. The only documentation of the reasoning behind the grotesque figures is in the carving itself. Any original legends have probably been lost over time or have changed so much that they don’t tell us anything about their true intentions. In recent years people have invented some new “legends” and claimed that they’re old stories. But there’s no authentic 700 year old writing about them to document these stories. Only if those Gargoyles could talk what stories they could tell us.

Eryl Garden Statue

Legends tell us they aren’t really stone statues, they’re real creatures. They turn into stone during the daylight and sleep. When the earth is covered by darkness they come alive to protect the building, church, castle, home or garden where they reside. They’ve save humans countless times receiving noting good in return just hatred, fear and loathing.

Some legends tell us Gothic Gargoyles were the child of the devil and humans. These creatures hatch out every 600 years or so. It’s said that it iss now time for them to hatch again…

It seems these Gothic Creatures do have a softer side. Here’s an interesting poem with a view of us through their eyes.

Gothic Decor

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gothic Decor

Do you need Gargoyles and Skulls to enjoy Gothic Decor in your home?

Urn Wall Fountain

Gothic decor has more to do with rich textures and ornate pieces than with Gargoyles and skulls.

Gothic style in medieval times was synonymous with everything that was barbarous and rude. But Gothic style doesn’t need to reflect that attitude, it can be warm and inviting with just a little research and thought.

The Gothic period of medieval times inspires the use of dark colors with heavy accent pieces such as animal heads, Gargoyles, claw-footed furniture and thick materials.

There are actually many types of Gothic decor depending on your love for the medieval times and how much history you wish to express.

Some people prefer the historic Gothic era. Some items to consider would be European Gargoyles, dragons, dragon pictures and raven sculptures. Any item would be acceptable that you would expect to see in a castle. A lighter version of this same era could be accomplished in using more rich earth tones. Use candles, swords, fur rugs, heavy tapestry fabrics and even a silver chalice or two.

Another type of Gothic decor is influenced by the Victorian era. This is best accomplished by layering with the use of rich colors and lacy textures. Use wallpaper or fabric on the walls, heavy framed artwork, cloth for covering tables, lots of candles and flowers and knickknacks. Satins and velvet give the home a rich lush feel. Be sure to include books, teapots, large and small vases and any other frill you stumble across.

Believe it or not some people go for Gothic cemetery art. This includes items made from iron, stone and tattered fabrics. Religious items and angles are a part of this theme.

Modern Gothic decor has a clean, sparse look and feel. Items to consider could be iron works, chrome accessories, leather furniture in dark colors and a skull here and there in the mix.

You’re home will look much nicer if the theme flows from room to room. It would be most unappealing if your house had Gothic decor throughout and a modern Italian style kitchen.

Choosing the decor for your home should be given serious consideration. It’s something you’ll want to be comfortable with because you’ll be living with it for a long time.

Gargoyle Statues

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gargoyle Statues

Want to know the names of those Scary Medieval Gargoyle Statues?

Emmett the Gargoyle Sculpture

Emmett the Gargoyle Statue is an interesting looking creature. Here’s one of the original medieval statues found perched on European rooftops. He appears to be in serious deep thought with some degree of melancholy sadness. This muscular statue is a true purebred, a classic. Now that he’s climbed down from the rooftops he’s found a new favorite place in the garden. He found the gate posts to be a very comfortable perch and the pedestal out by the pool gives him a great view.

Balthazar the watchman is a fierce worrier, he sits with his wings raised ready for whatever comes his way. He’s great for the entry way or on your desktop and also enjoys being in the garden.

Blegdan Warrior of Taliesin Statue. He has curled wings, spiny claws, fanged grimace and is ready to fight to the death with his sword and shield in hand. It’s a great addition to any garden or study.

Castle Avonshire Sculpture is a broad-shouldered beast. He stares out with a steady gaze. He’s very muscular and has threatening paws. He ready to watch over your front gate or garden and looks handsome on the hearth.

Chained Gargoyle of Turin Statue, his face is wrinkled and he has very long toes. He’s a fierce watchdog with broad shoulders and raised wings. No chain can hold him or his savage spirit. He would make a great watchdog at your front gate, watching over the garden grounds or on the hearth.

The Castle Gate Gargoyle Statue gazes down from medieval churches, towers and castles. This savage beast will be a loyal protector for your home and garden.

Spitting Gargoyle of Notre Dame Statue has been high atop the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris since medieval times. He’s no doubt the most famous of all these statues. He sits ready to strike at any moment.

Draga the Vampire is perched and ready to swoop down on the unsuspecting. He’s a perfect garden statue.

Grimble Garden Statue

Argos Gothic Gargoyle Sentinel Statue sits on his pedestal ready to leap to the sky. He’s ready for anything that comes his way with his spiny talons, wide raised wings, threatening teeth and intense gaze. He’s ready to stand watch over your garden grounds or gate.

I’ve only mentioned a few of these statues of the medieval times, many more exist. There are many other interesting Gargoyles items for the garden and home such as sconces, sundials, garden benches, key keepers, urns, cocktail bases, fountains, planters, clocks, candle holders, bookends, birdhouses, brackets, and pedestals. Any one of them would be perfect for the evil spirits away from your home and garden.

Dragons?

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Dragons

Are Gothic Gargoyles a cousin to the Dragon?

Winged Dragon
Gothic Gargoyles and Dragons are both creatures of medieval times. Legends tell of Gargoyles climbing to the tops of churches, cathedrals and other large buildings, glaring down to the streets below. Dragons are found in caves, underground, in water and even in drops of rain. They’re associated with the cold earth which is a great place to keep their treasure.

Both have huge claws and wings and sometimes a long tail. Gargoyles can’t fly even though they have large wings they glide on wind updrafts and on the wind. Dragons do fly and are often fire-breathing, reptile like creatures. They’re typically portrayed as scary, destructive monsters. They’re evil, mean and bloodthirsty; they have a strong liking for young virgin maidens.

Gothic Gargoyles are visually human like, part animal or reptilian and part man. Dragons are a combination of nine different animals: horns of a deer, the head of a camel, eyes of the devil, neck of a shake, abdomen of a large cockle, scales of a carp, claws of an eagle, paws of a tiger and ears of an ox.

Legends say if you eat a dragons heart you’ll get the power to understand birds, eat his tongue and you get the ability to win any argument and rubbing his blood on your skin will protect you from sword wounds.

Most dragons have huge hoards of gold and jewels hidden in their lairs. If you learn how to talk sweet to them and you’re good to them you can get them to bring you all their treasures from their lairs.

Other cultures see dragons as symbols of good fortune. Dragons are beautiful, friendly, and wise. They’re the angels of the orient. Instead of being hated, they’re loved and worshiped. Temples and shrines have been built to honor them, for they control the rain, rivers, lakes, and seas

Peep Garden Statue

In ancient times, dragons often represented evil, destruction, and death. The dragon Apophis in Egyptian mythology was the enemy of Ra, the sun god. Dragons also play a role in the bible, where they’re frequently identified with Satan. In Greece and Rome, dragons were thought to understand the secrets of the earth.

In modern times dragons have become extremely popular. Pictures, dragonology, clip art, tattoos, statues, pet bearded dragons and games are just a few of the interests of the dragon culture. One of the most popular games is Dungeons and Dragons it’s a role playing game turning many unlikely people into Dragon Masters.

Gothic Gargoyles have many followers searching for gothic music, clothing, decor, episodes, tattoos, pictures, statues and sunglasses. They have a love and attraction to this grotesque creature.

Gargoyle Sunglasses

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gothic Gargoyles

Did Gothic Gargoyles wear sunglasses?

Gothic Gargoyles should wear sunglasses as they stand watch on rooftops, gateposts and pedestals all day long. Their job is to protect you from evil spirits. So, wouldn’t you think they would want to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays?

If a Gargoyle were to buy sunglasses, do you think they would want to make a fashion statement? Or, would they go for the extreme sport sunglasses for the quality and features they provide?

First this creature would need to choose a pair that suits the shape of his face. The secret rule of thumb is to choose a pair with the opposite shape of your face.

Next check the label, sitting in the sun all day they’ll need to have sunglasses that block at least 99% of harmful UV rays.

Now choose the Lens they can be either glass or plastic. Some even have special hi-tech treatments.

Mirrored or not? This thin layer of metallic applied to lens reduces visible light that would have reached the eye, but it doesn’t reduce the UV rays.

Polarized? Yes, definitely. This cuts the glare from smooth surfaces such as pavement, windows, water, sand, snow, swords and shields.

A company in Rhode Island has developed sunglasses with pure design and functional purposes. They have impact resistant lens, they exceed the MIL-STD 622 ballistic test, which consists of stopping a .22 caliber bullet at 20 feet. The lenses are 100% UVA, UVB and UVC protection. Their polarized lens absorb horizontal polarized light to eliminate glare. The lenses are coated with a NASA derived scratch-resistant and anti-fog coating. And these performance sunglasses are precision molded and hand finished, the design provides 210 degree of wraparound protection. These sunglasses can withstand the rigorous arena the Gothic Gargoyle operates in. What better name for this eye ware than Gargoyle Sunglasses.

Soon all the statues on buildings and in gardens and around homes will be sporting a pair of them.

Disney’s™ Gargoyles

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gargoyles

Are you a fan of Disney’s™ Gargoyles?

Wow, Disney’s™ Gargoyles series was such a great animated series. It ran from 1994 thru 1997. I hate they didn’t continue it.

The storyline begins in Scotland in the year 994 A.D.

It’s all about a clan of fearless Gargoyle Warriors who magically turn into stone during the day time to sleep but come alive as the sun sets.

Their home is Castle Wyvern, they live there with humans. The Gargoyles are defenseless during the day time when they sleep, they need to be protected. They made a deal with the humans to watch over them during the daytime, in turn the Gargoyles will watch over the humans and defend the castle at night.

Time goes on, the castle is defended and the humans, unbeknown to them, are saved many times. The humans fail to hold up their end of the deal, the enemy is tipped off. The castle is invaded and all the Gargoyles are killed except six.

These six are put in a stone hibernation by. He cast a magic spell which causes them to become stone statues day and night for one thousand years.

One day Castle Wyvern and the Grimorum are purchased by David Xanatos who happens to live in modern day Manhattan. He brings them to the city and soon discovers how to break the Magnus spell. In 1994 the one thousand year hibernation is up and the statues awaken. Oh what a shock to see how their world has changed. This is where the rich and complex adventures of Disney’s™ Gargoyles begins.

Gargoyle Tattoo

Posted by on March 9, 2010 under Gargoyle Tattoos

Is it an Ancient Art Form or a Modern Craze?

Gargoyle tattoos are very popular among the youths. I bet the ancient sculptors of these grotesque creatures never considered their demonic designs would become a fashion statement in the modern world.

Gargoyles have been associated with protecting the buildings they occupy for centuries. They’ve gained a huge popularity because they’re believed to have the ability to cast out evil spells from the wearer’s life and attract good in its place. They keep evil at bay. Gargoyle tattoos are joined to the body with ink, they act as an amulet and talisman to protect the body from evil and harm.

These death defying designs sometimes combine two or more animals. They’re called chimera. Some of the most popular designs include the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The human skull is popular as a gargoyle tattoo; it too is a death defying symbol, believed to allow the wearer to cheat death or to protect from permanent death when tattooed onto the body.

The fashion statement created from this age old creature keeps the legends of the medieval gargoyle alive in the 21st century through gargoyle tattoos.

It would be a good idea to do a bit of research on the gargoyle symbol you intend to have inked on your body before you choose your design. Understanding the historical background of your gargoyle or chimera will help you to choose the one that suits your particular style and culture.

HI I posted this last month. I HAVE two statues of gargoyles Does anyone can help ME OR TELL ME ABOUT THEM YOU CAN SEE THE PICTURES IN WWW.myspace.com/babyrun1920

Go to an antique dealer or an appraiser and ask! Honestly though, probably are just some garbage picked someone a garden center that has a little worn. Besides that your profile is private so we can not see anything but a brilliant cat. I see what appear to bar holes. Rebar forms are not available again so I paid again, to feel they are antiques. The overall design is not either looking very old.
